The Asansol - Durgapur region

If you guys, especially those of us who are outside West Bengal or India can give your kids some info as the area around St. Vincent's:

The Asansol - Durgapur region (urban pop: 1.6 million) is one of West Bengal's major industrial and urban regions. The two major towns are Asansol and Durgapur. Asansol is about 200 kms while Durgapur is 168 kms from Calcutta. This region is a major center of coal mining and the area around the town of Ranigunj is well known for its quality coal deposits. The Damodar river which flows through this region has been tamed with the setting up of the Damodar Valley Corporation. The DVC controls several dams and power stations (both thermal and hydro) spread over West Bengal and Bihar. Many public sector undertakings have their plants here. Durgapur is the site of an integrated steel plant complex (SAIL-DSP) and an alloy steel plant (SAIL-ASP) complex. The townships of Burnpur and Kulti also have steel complexes (IISCO). An aluminum unit of BALCO is situated in Bidhanbag. A major cable factory of HCL is situated in Rupnarayanpur while the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) is located in Chittaranjan. One of India's premier regional engineering colleges and the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute are located in Durgapur while Asansol too has an engineering college. This region is served by a good railway and road network. Asansol is also major railway junction. The Grand Trunk Road or NH-2 is the main road through this region.
